What Do Angel Investors Actually Fund? A 2026 Analysis of 58,000 Investor Profiles
Ask ten founders what angel investors “look for” and you’ll get ten vibes-based answers — traction, team, TAM, the founder’s “energy.” What almost nobody does is look at the actual distribution of where angel money concentrates. So we did. We analyzed 58,119 angel investor and VC profiles in the AngelBacked database — the sectors they back, and the cities they cluster in — to replace the folklore with numbers.
The short version: angel capital is far more concentrated by sector than most founders assume, tech-adjacent categories dominate the top of the list, and where an investor is based still shapes what they fund. If you’re raising, the practical takeaway is that “find angel investors” is the wrong search. “Find angel investors who fund my sector, at my stage, near my hubs” is the one that closes rounds.
The sectors angel investors actually fund
Across 58,119 profiles spanning 1,802 distinct market categories, the concentration at the top is stark. These are the fifteen sectors backed by the most investors in our database:
| Rank | Sector | Investors | Share of all angels |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Software | 17,310 | 29.8% |
| 2 | Media & Entertainment | 16,989 | 29.2% |
| 3 | Information Technology (IT) | 15,710 | 27.0% |
| 4 | Health Care | 14,506 | 25.0% |
| 5 | Financial Services | 13,214 | 22.7% |
| 6 | Enterprise Software | 12,187 | 21.0% |
| 7 | Mobile | 11,796 | 20.3% |
| 8 | Internet | 11,483 | 19.8% |
| 9 | SaaS | 11,338 | 19.5% |
| 10 | Consumer Internet | 10,792 | 18.6% |
| 11 | FinTech | 10,673 | 18.4% |
| 12 | E-commerce | 10,268 | 17.7% |
| 13 | Productivity Software | 8,819 | 15.2% |
| 14 | Artificial Intelligence (AI) | 8,736 | 15.0% |
| 15 | Biotechnology | 8,072 | 13.9% |
Software alone appears in 17,310 investor profiles — nearly three in ten angels in the dataset. (Investors back multiple sectors, so the shares sum to more than 100%.) The pattern is clear: the top of the market is software and its immediate neighbors — IT, enterprise software, SaaS, and productivity tools. If you’re building B2B software, the universe of relevant angels is enormous. If you’re not, the game changes.
Why “Media & Entertainment” ranks second
The second-place finish surprises people, but it reflects how broadly the category is drawn: creator-economy tools, gaming, streaming infrastructure, adtech, and consumer social all live here. Many angels are themselves operators or executives from media and consumer companies, and they back what they know. The lesson isn’t “pivot to media” — it’s that an angel’s operating background is the single best predictor of what they fund. A former Stripe PM angel-invests in fintech; an ex-Riot Games exec writes checks into gaming.
The long tail is where differentiated angels live
The top fifteen sectors get the headlines, but remember the denominator: 1,802 distinct market categories. Health Care alone fans out into digital health, medical devices, biotech, and health IT; “FinTech” splits into payments, lending, insurtech, and wealthtech. For a founder in a specialized niche — climate tech, space, dental software, legaltech — the generalist software angel is a low-percentage cold email. The specialist who has already backed three companies in your exact category is a warm one.
This is the core mistake we see founders make: they optimize for the quantity of angels they can reach instead of the relevance. Twenty investors who have funded your sector will out-convert two thousand who haven’t, every time.
Where the money sits: the geography of angel investing
Sector tells you who; geography tells you where to spend your networking energy. Here’s where the 58,119 investors concentrate:
| City | Investors |
|---|---|
| San Francisco | 4,777 |
| London | 2,423 |
| Los Angeles | 1,422 |
| Boston | 1,275 |
| Chicago | 1,077 |
| Paris | 956 |
| Austin | 838 |
| Toronto | 731 |
| Palo Alto | 724 |
| Dallas | 619 |
| Seattle | 535 |
| Bengaluru | 524 |
The San Francisco Bay Area still dwarfs everything — add Palo Alto to San Francisco and it’s over 5,500 investors in one metro. But the story underneath is decentralization: 61% of the investors are US-based (35,432 of 58,119), which means nearly four in ten are not. London, Paris, Toronto, and Bengaluru are now genuine angel hubs, not afterthoughts. If you’re building outside the Valley, there is a local capital base — it’s just less visible because it doesn’t tweet as much.
What this means for your raise
- Filter by sector first, not check size. A relevant investor at a smaller check beats a bigger, disinterested one. Sector fit is the top-of-funnel filter that actually predicts replies.
- Read the operating background. An angel’s past companies tell you what they’ll fund far better than a self-reported “thesis.” Match your startup to their history.
- Go where you already are. Your local hub — even if it’s Austin, Toronto, or Bengaluru rather than SF — is full of angels who prefer to back companies they can meet in person.
- Mind the long tail. If you’re in a niche, the top-15 sectors aren’t your list. The specialist who has done deals in your exact category is.
How to find the angels who fund your sector
This is exactly what AngelBacked is built for. Instead of guessing, you can search 58,000+ investor profiles and filter by the sector, stage, and city that match your company — then get verified contact details to reach them directly. You can also watch recent funding activity in Signals to see which angels are writing checks right now in your space, because a recently-active investor is worth ten dormant ones.
Fundraising doesn’t reward the founder who emails the most investors. It rewards the one who emails the right twenty. The data above is your shortcut to figuring out who those twenty are.
Methodology: figures are drawn from 58,119 angel investor and VC profiles in the AngelBacked database as of July 2026, covering 1,802 market categories. Investors are associated with multiple sectors, so sector shares sum to more than 100%. City counts reflect the investor’s primary listed location.
